PBS Carrier Depicts Life on an Aircraft Carrier

Watching PBS Carrier is as close as you can get to being there. I lived on an aircraft off and on for five years and after watching the PBS Carrier series I can tell you it hit close to home. PBS Carrier brought back memories of the thrill of flying F-14’s off the carrier as well the pain of missing loved ones while deployed for extended periods of time. By watching PBS Carrier anyone can learn the sacrifices individuals in the Navy make as well as their families at home. I have several traps on the Nimitz, the aircraft carrier depicted in PBS Carrier.

I was deployed overseas twice to the Mediterranean flying F-14’s on an aircraft like those seen on PBS Carrier and lived that life for over half a year at a time. I made great friends and will always remember the amazing times we had together. The most difficult part of the deployment were not the night carrier landings on a pitching deck in stormy seas but was the separation from loved ones for long periods at time. It was this experience that inspired me to write West of the Rock.

Similar to PBS Carrier, this book illuminates the elite world of Navy pilots.  In a series of powerful and often harrowing narratives, I present their life trajectories, from looking up in awe at the power and glory of warplanes, facing the ordeals of even “routine” landings at night on a pitching carrier deck and interacting with the comparatively unremarkable world of civilians. PBS Carrier has done a great job of depicting what life is like on an aircraft carrier. The book I wrote takes it one step further by telling the rest of the story that even PBS Carrier does not tell you.
