I was a fighter pilot for the Navy flying F-14’s for ten years and I keep getting asked how to become a fighter pilot. It eventually led me to write West of the Rock where I describe how to become a fighter pilot.
This is how to become a fighter pilot. First and foremost is getting that four-year college degree. Neither the Air Force or the Navy will train anyone how to become a fighter pilot without a bachelors degree. There are three options for how to become a fighter pilot. You can go to the Naval Academy or Air Force Academy and have them pay for your entire school on how to become a fighter pilot which is extremely competitive. Another route on how to become a fighter pilot is to attend a regular four year college with a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship, or after college join the Navy or Air Force for Officer Candidate School (OCS). Your grades in college as well as screening tests will determine who is picked by the services for training on how to become a fighter pilot.
Your skills and grades in training will determine whether you are picked to fly either jets, propeller aircraft or helicopters. To fly fighters you have to be picked to fly jets, that is how to become a fighter pilot. In jet training your grades will determine whether you will fly transports, bombers or fighters.
After flying fighters I wrote this book where I describe exactly what it is like to be a Navy fighter pilot. It has vivid descriptions of what training is like and stark revelations of what that life entails. If you ever dreamed about how to become a fighter pilot then reading this book is as close as you’ll get to being there. You will then know how to become a fighter pilot. In the end, how to become a fighter pilot is all about motivation.
