Naval aviation is a term that has been used for less than one hundred years and yet it is still evolving. From the United States Navy using flying boats, to having a fleet of scores of aircraft carriers in World War II, to the Navy's current foray into the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, it is a world that is constantly changing. Naval aviation has always attracted a number of unique individuals wanting challenges and seeking adventure. Attempting to land on a "postage stamp" in the middle of the ocean certainly falls into both those fields.
West of the Rock is my attempt to illustrate a small slice of what naval aviation was like during the time that I flew F-14's. It was a world where I was able to work with some of the most intelligent and skilled pilots with whom I have ever flown, as well as with some of the most colorful and witty. My portrayal of characters is a blend of all these. To many they are called navy fighter pilots but technically they are known as Naval Aviators, a term that the Navy uses. It lets the world know they are more than simply pilots.
In spite of its uniqueness, or perhaps because of it, naval aviation is not an easy world to live in for either Naval Aviators or their families. There are obvious dangers for both aviators and their fellow squadron members. In addition there is stress that is caused by constant deployments, affecting them and their families.
West of the Rock is a glimpse into naval aviation and the lives of those who live in that world. The art of warfare is constantly changing. Roman legions and the sword have slipped into history as have knights and armor. The time may come where Naval Aviators may join them in history. Until then, their world still exists, with Naval Aviators put in harm's way and always at the tip of this age's modern-day spear.
If you really want to know what this life is like, what they don't or won't tell you, then this book will vividly describe to you the rest of the story.
